Intrepid Travel has confirmed that 14 Australian passengers were on board the truck that crashed in Kenya on Sunday.

The tour company does not plan to cancel any trips in the region and will continue to use the road where the accident occurred.

“It’s a major highway and is one that is frequented by hundreds of tourists on a daily basis,” Intrepid Travel managing director James Thornton said.

A total of 22 passengers and three staff were involved in the accident, which claimed the lives of two Australians.

“From all reports it sounds like a very unfortunate accident that has occurred,” Thornton said.

“We see no reason to change the trips at this stage,” he added.

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the two deceased were Melbourne grandmother Olga King and a man in his 60s.

Of the remaining passengers onboard the truck, which was travelling from Nairobi, there were one Swiss, three English, two American and two German nationals.

They were travelling from Kenya to Tanzania on a trip that departed September 6.

Of those hospitalised, nine travellers have been discharged while 12 remain in hospital.

Intrepid reports that those discharged have returned home or continued with their travel plans.

“We are helping liaise with the travel insurance companies to ensure that the passengers and staff continue to be provided with the support they need,” Thornton said.

Intrepid has arranged counselling for passengers and staff and will conduct its own internal investigation.

“Any clients who are concerned can contact us directly. We are very happy to discuss individual situations in more detail.”

Intrepid Travel have set up a dedicated phone line and those concerned are asked to call 03 8601 4380.
