Expanded Qantas LAN partnership opens South America

Qantas is opening more destinations throughout South America by expanding on its codeshare offerings with LAN in the LATAM Airlines Group.

In exchange, passengers on LAN will have greater access on Qantas services across the Tasman, and across Qantas’ extensive domestic network.

The added codeshare services onboard LAN include Santiago and Chile to six destinations across South America, including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Lima, all offering customers seamless connections with baggage and airport transfers and more options to earn frequent flyer points.

Increasing its presence in growth markets through strategic partnerships is part of Qantas’ codeshare expansion strategy, according to Qantas executive manager international sales, Stephen Thompson.

“Santiago is a key gateway for our customers and this development will strengthen its prominence as hub for onward connections, offering the additional customer benefits of a codeshare service – more opportunities to earn frequent flyer points and luggage checked straight through to their final destination,” Thompson said.

LAN chief executive officer of international business, Damian Scokin welcomed the expanded partnership which adds eight Australian cities to the airline’s destination offerings.

Qantas operates three non-stop return services per week between Sydney and Santiago with their Boeing 747 aircraft, reconfigured with new interiors and lie-flat beds in Business Class.

In addition, Qantas codeshares on LAN’s daily flights on the Sydney-Auckland-Santiago route, making it 10 return flights between Sydney and Santiago per week.

To cater for demand over the holiday period, Qantas will also operate a fourth weekly service between 21 November 2014 and 13 February 2015, subject to regulatory approval.
