Peru seeks to widen agents’ knowledge

Peru’s tourism body is shifting its focus towards Australia’s luxury travellers as a spate of high end properties open across the destination.

Speaking to Travel Today at a roadshow in Sydney last night, PromPeru’s Australian representative Manuela Nielsen said Australians were starting to discover the destination’s growing number of luxury properties, such as Cusco’s Palacio Nazarenas.

“We’re definitely targeting that end of the market with different marketing activities and campaigns,” she said. “We can really see a change.”

Meanwhile, Nielsen highlighted PromPeru’s commitment to growing its relationship with the trade, with only 50% of bookings currently being made through travel agents.

“Travel agents are the ones that can explain to the public what Peru has to offer,” she said. But educating the trade about the range of experiences on offer is key, she added.

“They know about the main destinations Machu Picchu and Cusco, but they aren’t so aware of the amazing archaeological sites in the north of Peru and Lake Titicaca in the south.”

Nielsen highlighted PromPeru’s training programs which are available to both wholesalers and agents and revealed an online scheme was being considered.

To further raise awareness, the tourism body this year adapted its roadshow format to feature a quiz-style format, enabling agents to learn more about the country.

It is the second year the tourism body has held roadshows in Australia. But next year, a tie-up with other South American destinations is looking likely, Nielsen revealed, although PromPeru opted not to join Chile, Argentina and Colombia for their joint roadshow in July.

“We wanted to see how the roadshow worked out,” she said. “But we’re definitely considering it for next year because we saw there were good results.”
