Darwin return for Malaysia Airlines

From November 1, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will once again fly to Darwin from its Kuala Lumpur hub, with the UK market a key focus of the new service.

Withdrawn in 2002, the route has been reinstated in order to provide passengers with better access to the Northern Territory, according to the airline.

The five times weekly service will be operated by 160-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft in a two-class configuration and it will connect with MAS' double daily A380 service from London Heathrow direct to Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy welcomed the return of the airline to Darwin.

"This service heralds a fantastic opportunity to grow UK tourism in Darwin and the Northern Territory," he said.

"We know British travellers love to explore and get off the beaten track. They'll soon have easy and direct access to the natural wonders of the Top End, including the Territory's lush rainforests, unique wildlife and Indigenous rock art."

The addition of Darwin to MAS' network takes the number of Australia and New Zealand ports it serves to seven.

"Operating across key Australian destinations is an important part of our offering," MAS UK & Ireland area manager, Yuzrizal Mohd Yousuf, said.

"We are really pleased to provide exciting new services to our growing client base."

The airline recently announced the relaunch of Dubai services from August 5 and the commencement of services to Kochi from September 1.
