A total of 833,000 Australian cruise passengers have helped swell global numbers to more than 21 million last year, new figures show.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) says 21.3 million passengers embarked on cruises from ports around the world in 2013 – a 77 per cent rise from 10 years ago.

The association's figures showed that 55% of global passengers are from North America, including almost 11 million residents from the USA.

European passengers clocked in at 30%, or 6.4 million, including 1.73 million from the UK and Ireland, as well as 1.69 million from Germany.

Last year alone, passengers and crews worldwide spend an average of AUD$142 for each day the ship was docked at a port, with the global cruise industry generating over AUD$130 billion in total economic contributions in the past 12 months.
