Jetstar "sets record straight" on Asia

Jetstar chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka has addressed “misinformation” about the group’s Asian operations at the CAPA Aviation Summit in Sydney.

Opening day two of the conference Hrdlicka referred to what has been commonly described as the “Asian distraction" for Jetstar.

“Take a step back and look at the bigger picture – the facts speak for themselves,” she said, referring to more than 25% of Australians born offshore, with more than a third of those from Asia.

“A big part of the Australian community is Asian in background.”

In addition, six of Australian’s top 10 trading partners are in Asia, with China and Japan the top two.

“After iron ore and coal, travel is our third largest export,” Hrdlicka said.”The ties between Australia and Asia grow stronger every year and that’s not going to change. Air travel is the life blood of that relationship.”

With air travel in the region expected to significantly increase by 2030, she stressed the importance of having a strong presence.

“We can stand by and dismiss it as an Asian distraction or we can step up and play an active role,” she said.

"Asia is anything but a distraction. Asia is an absolutely vital part of our future.”

Meanwhile, Hrdlicka highlighted the success of the airline's Asian operations, stressing each airline is in control of its own destiny.

"Like any investor, we expect a return," she said. "Success is a long term proposition."
